In the current Brazilian context where, in a nauseating manner, these descriptors are used to diminish and, above all, exclude others and delegitimize their voice, Lia de Itamaracá, at the age of nearly 80, is the vibrant voice of resistance and an illuminated existence. Her weapon (and her soul) is the "ciranda."
With the wisdom of labor and art, the artist, who started working as a child and never stopped, whether performing the role of a lunch lady in a public school or acting in cinema, including her participation in the award-winning "Bacurau," Lia carries within her the transformative power of the "ciranda." Lia also began to act as a social entrepreneur, promoting actions that improve the living conditions in her own community.
Mindful of environmental issues, the artist contributed to the development of periodic beach cleaning activities in Itamaracá, raising awareness about the impact of ocean pollution. Additionally, she was responsible for establishing the "Estrela de Lia" Cultural Center, whose primary goal is to promote local cultural expressions, inspiring the new generations and also contributing to fostering and diversifying tourism on the island, which is still heavily focused on the region's natural beauty. Born Maria Madalena Correia do Nascimento into a family with 17 other siblings, the artist fell in love with music as she listened to the sea that bathes her island, Itamaracá, in Pernambuco. Still a girl at the age of 12, other waves, those of the radio, brought "ciranda" to her, a music and dance style that reigned in the capital, Recife. That's when her infatuation was complete. It was the beginning of Lia de Itamaracá, a songwriter and singer, a "ciranda" master who brought this music and her art not only to all of Brazil but to the world. Through her magnetic stage presence, where her work can truly be felt in all dimensions, the Pernambucan artist reigns.
With her talent and dedication, Lia quickly became known as the queen of "ciranda" and, in 2005, she was proclaimed a Living Heritage of Pernambuco. Following her determination, the artist, who has four recorded albums, took it upon herself to share this rhythm with the world as a living and pulsating art, much like the rhythm of the sea, which, by the way, inspires this art.
So, sometimes turning to the quilombola past and sometimes looking to the future, what Lia promotes is the strengthening of the Brazilian identity, diverse and formed from contributions that come from Africa, Europe, and, of course, indigenous peoples.
In the European Summer of 2023, Lia de Itamaracá shone on prestigious stages at renowned festivals like the Paléo Festival, Horizante Festival, and Womad Festival, solidifying her status as a globally acclaimed artist. Her influence transcended borders and gained international recognition when the World Music Expo (Womex) selected her for a showcase in 2022, confirming her relevance in the global music scene.
Furthermore, in January 2024, when Lia celebrates her eightieth birthday, she will be honored by two of the most important samba schools in Rio and São Paulo during Carnival.
